April Fool's Day History

The story of April Fool's Day is unclear. There is no first "April Fool's Day" that can be identified on the calendar. However, many believe that the history of the day dates back to 16th-century France when the start of the New Year was observed on April 1.

In 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world, and the new year fell on January 1. Some people, however, had not heard or believed in the date change, so they continued to celebrate New Years Day on April 1.

Others played them and called them "April Fool's Day". They sent them into a “crazy race” or tried to make them believe something was wrong. This custom continued to be applied in Western Europe and continued to spread in the United States and the rest of the world.

April Fool's Day Customs and Celebration

In France, April 1 is also known as April Fish - or April Fish. On this day, people try to tie paper fish on the backs of unsuspecting friends and colleagues. This practice dates back to the 19th century, as evidenced by the many postcards of the time illustrating the practice.

In the United States, people often try to scare or deceive unsuspecting friends and family members using various techniques.

In Ireland, a letter is often given to an unsuspecting person on April Fool's Day to be given to another person. When the person carrying the letter arrives at its destination, the next person sends it somewhere else because the note inside the envelope says, "Send the fool even further."
